X-Ray and Ultrasound

At Island Tides Veterinary Hospital, we are just as concerned about the well-being of your pets as you are.

Imaging (X-Ray and Ultrasound)

Island Tides Veterinary Hospital has comprehensive in-house imaging services. When your cat or dog is sick, imaging can be a helpful tool for the diagnosis of a medical or surgical condition. X-rays (also known as radiographs) and ultrasounds can be performed on-site. Our veterinarians are trained to read these images in hospitals, but can also refer images to specialists for specific concerns.

Are x-rays and ultrasounds safe?

Yes! Both x-rays and ultrasound are safe, non-invasive, and non-painful imaging techniques. Our x-ray is digital and the radiation emitted is much lower nowadays due to significantly improved technology over the years.

Our ultrasound is portable and can be moved into quiet areas of the hospital (or exam rooms in some cases) to reduce stress to our pet patients.

Will my pet need an x-ray or ultrasound?

Your veterinarian may offer one or both imaging techniques depending on your pet’s medical or surgical condition. X-rays are often helpful in assessing bone or organ conditions or looking for large growths inside the body. Ultrasound is very helpful in assessing the structure and the “insides” of internal organs, such as the bladder, liver, kidneys, spleen, heart, lungs, intestines, and more.

Sometimes, images can be collected on the same day as the initial appointment; other times, your pet may be booked for a future imaging appointment. Because these images are digital, getting results is very fast and the image quality is exceptional.
